Cooking with Herbs | October 20, 2020
Margaret Iacone, doctor or Chinese herbal medicine, gave club members a wonderful presentation on Using Herbs in Cooking with some lesser known herbs and how they are used in preparing delicious foods and also good for our health. Member Lesle N. brought in a crockpot filled with a tasty soup using some of the herbs that Margaret shared with us.

Field Trip to Planting Fields and Clark | October 6, 2020
DHGC members met at the Planting Field Arboretum in Oyster Bay for an outside tour of the gardens and then drove to the Clark Botanical Gardens in Albertson. Many of the members have never been to either of the gardens so it was a delightful treat from being sheltered in our own garden sanctuaries!

Field Trip to Bridge Gardens | September 15, 2020
About 18 members took a ride out East to stroll through the Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton.
Many of us had never visited these gardens and were pleasantly surprised to see some interesting varieties of flowers and vegetables, growing in their CSA garden. The gardens were void of any other visitors and we socially distanced and ate our bag lunches while enjoying the fresh air and great company of each other. After that, we took a stroll through Marder’s Garden Center like no other we’ve ever seen…rustic landscape and yard items that were truly unique!

Happy Birthday Rita! | August 1, 2020
Members of the Dix Hills Hills Garden Club helped celebrate Rita Bajakian’s 90th birthday on August 1, 2020. A few board members surprised Rita in masks and had Wendy’s daughters, Rhiannon and Delaney, ring her doorbell, and we all yelled, “Surprise, Happy Birthday.” Rita was showered with gifts and flowers and an Edible Arrangement all of which brought tears to her eyes as she had received beautiful cards from all of our members for her birthday….she treasures all of you and said “my garden club friends mean so much to me!”

A Walk through Lisa D.'s Garden
On June 9th, Kathy P., Nan and Nancy took a stroll through member Lisa Denis' garden....what a great job she and her husband have done with their property! They have created lots of "outside" rooms and spaces in which to enjoy the great outdoors.

Civic Beautification Project at Countrywood Primary Center, South Huntington
On Monday, June 1st, Dix Hills Garden Club members, Kathy P., Wendy, Nancy, Colleen, Joan, Susan G., Lisa D. and Linda W. teamed up with Countrywood staff at the school, Christine, Danielle Commander, Danielle Kennedy, Susan Lamorte, Laura VanTassel, and Adrienne Workman to beautify the landscape and encourage a love of plants and nature for the students who hopefully, will return in September.
Tuesday, June 2nd, several of our members were back again to finish planting and spreading soil also with the help of teen volunteers and prospective member, Kate L.
We were lucky to have four local teenagers volunteer to help us do some of the grunt work: John, Tina and Nina Rodriguez and John’s good friend, Conner. We couldn’t have accomplished as much as we did without them! Also, to make it possible behind the scenes were Nick and Nan Gibbons, who gave so graciously of their time and handwork to rototill the planting beds before we could ever get to the planting!
Thanks for a job well done with great teamwork.

Annual Plant Sale Fundraiser from a "Social Distance" | May 2020
The Dix Hills Garden Club came up with a creative solution in order to hold their annual May Plant Sale fundraiser. While "social distancing" and wearing masks and gloves, members were given their own "time slot" of 20 minutes in which to shop for perennials and annuals. The sale took place on Tuesday, 5/19 in Nancy B.'s front yard & the club raised over $700 in sales and donations. It was both innovative and satisfying to see our garden club friends if only for a short time. Hopefully, June will bring us an ease in state restrictions, and we will hold our regularly scheduled meeting! Until then, stay healthy and safe everyone.

DHGC Keeps Giving | May 2020
Kathy and Nancy dropped off food at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Melville this morning, May 11th. The coordinator, Maryann, told us of families in need all throughout the town of Huntington. The church works with other town wide agencies to provide food to the needy in our area.
Blessed are we who able to feed the hungry! Thanks to all members who dropped food donations off at either Kathy or Nancy’s homes last week. The giving nature of our club members is what makes our club so special. Stay safe!

Virtual Grow and Show | May 2020
A Special Tour of Rita B.'s Garden
Thursday, May 7, Kathy and Nancy met at Rita’s to tour her spring gardens. Decked out in masks that Kathy had sewn while in Florida, they were treated to some real “eye candy”!! Rita’s passion and knowledge of gardening has resulted in serene, peaceful and beautiful surroundings that she has toiled away in for the past 54 years.
We all social distanced ourselves as we strolled through Rita’s amazing gardens as she pointed out the names of all the flowering perennials and bulbs that were in full bloom. Rita commented that she has a “spring garden” and that next year, the club should take our May field trip to visit her gardens and hopefully, by then we will not have to wear face masks!
What an inspiration to us all.

Virtual Grow and Show | In lieu of our March 18, 2020 meeting
Although the threat of the nasty Corvid19 virus has postponed our March meeting, Spring is not postponed! Everywhere we look, we see signs of spring and new life, and it gives us a peek into how wonderful our gardens will look in just a few short months. Wendy had the idea to share our photos of what is popping in our gardens now since we cannot share in person during our Horticulture Segment of our monthly meeting. Take a walk or visit a State or County park where we can take photos and send those along with where these shots were taken.
