Old Westbury Gardens Tour | Thursday, October 28, 2021
Twelve members of our club and three of their friends had a guided tour of Old Westbury Gardens given by docent, Barbara L. The history of the estate was given to us as we meandered around the grounds with spectacular views at every turn. The weather cooperated even though it was a bit brisk. We toured the Westbury House mansion too before we had lunch at the Cafe in the Woods.

Bill Erdmann "Your Backyard as a Sanctuary" | July 20, 2021
Bill spoke to us at our July meeting at the Dix Hills Fire Department. He brought us an array of plants for our members to purchase from his unique nursery, Hidden Ridge, in Ridge, NY. He filled us in on annuals and perennials to plant in our gardens for color all season long! Bill was quite entertaining and had our members smiling and laughing for over an hour! Treat yourself to his unique nursery, and you will see his passion in every plant he has to sell.

Field Trip to Landcraft Environments | June 17, 2021
The gardens of Landcraft never cease to amaze us! As you can see by the smiles on members' faces, everyone was extremely happy to be strolling along as Bill Smith gave us a guided tour. We can't say enough about this place! You will see plants and flowers you have never seen before, and the landscape changes every year and there is always something to behold that you just never noticed the last time you visited. Bill and Dennis have now created the Landcraft Foundation, and the gardens are open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from April to the beginning of November. Landcraft Environments is surely worth the trip to the North Folk of Long Island!

Garden Walk in Geiger Park, Deer Park | June 10, 2021
Members met at Carlls River Botanical Garden at Geiger Park in Deer Park to celebrate National Garden Week. We were lucky enough to meet the resident horticulturist, Jen, who gave us a guided tour and filled us in on what else the Town of Babylon has in store for the remaining acres to be developed into a Japanese Stroll Garden, bird aviaries, and houses to be used to educate the public. These gardens are quite a "gem" in our "backyard"...simply amazing and serene --- hard to believe that is just off of bustling Deer Park Avenue! Go visit the gardens if you haven't gotten there yet.

Field Trip to Hofstra University | May 11, 2021
On Tuesday, May 11, a trip to visit Hofstra University gardens was organized by our Co-President, Joan Enright. Ten members (Joan, Vicky, Laura, Marilyn, Karen, Noreen, Kathy K., Nancy, Kathy P., and Kathy G.) all met at Hofstra to tour the gardens on the South Campus. The flowers, shrubs and trees were quite impressive and we all even learned about some new varieties as we had to use apps like Seek and Garden Answers to identify plants that we had never seen before in our lives. The weather cooperated and we had lunch outside on one of the many patios on the North side of campus. A delightful day was had by all.

On Thursday, May 6, the Dix Hills Garden Club held their annual plant sale at Nancy B.’s home to generate funds for our community service projects and our upcoming flower show in September.
Members dug up assorted perennials from their gardens to share, and the club purchased flats of colorful annuals from a local grower.

"Petunia Pig" with GSSC Brownie Troop 703 | May 3, 2021
Despite the gloomy weather, the Brownies added sunshine to the day as they created their Petunia Pig Planters from recycled materials provided by the members of the Dix Hills Garden Club. Members of the club who were gracious enough to give their time were Nancy, Wendy, Joan, Kathy P., Anna, Carrie and Gloria. Special thanks to Nancy’s husband, Paul, who cut out all the openings in the plastic bottles and drilled the holes for the cork legs. The girls will earn a gardening badge paid for by the club.

Planting Fields Poinsettia Display | January 7, 2021
On January 7, 2021 seven members of the Dix Hills Garden Club met at the Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay. The trip was organized by our co-presidents, Joan and Vicki. We were able to maintain social distancing and wear masks. We were the only folks allowed into the main greenhouse. We were treated to a beautiful poinsettia display – the varieties and colors never before seen along with other tropical plants that created an almost magical environment. Blooming plants were mingled among other tropical trees and plants. It was wonderful to be out on such a beautiful day. It was truly magnificent to observe such a great display and good to be among garden club friends!
